As part of the World Weavers Program, 6th graders travelled to the Art Institute of Chicago to explore the many textiles on display at the museum, including a visit to a special exhibit by Ethel Stein who is a master weaver. The students adeptly utilized their art vocabulary as they discussed each piece they experienced with both our artist-in-residence Mr. Eller and another Urban Gateways artist Ms. Yun. Check out the pictures below from our trip! On Friday, October 17th, students in kindergarten through the 4th grade at Stone were treated to a performance by the Piel Morena Contemporary Dance company. The five performers used dance to tell the story of the well-known children's book "Have You Filled A Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud. After the performance the dancers talked with the students about being kind and "filling each other's buckets," then taught the students a dance routine to the song "Happy". After the performance was over, the dancers enjoyed answering students' questions about what it's like to be a professional dancer. Enjoy these photos from the performance! After school Chorus will begin on Tuesday, October 14th and run on every Tuesday until Winter Break. Chorus will take place in the Auditorium from 3:15-4:15 and is open to students in 2nd through 5th grade. Students interested in joining must return a signed permission slip to me as soon as possible. If the permission slip I sent home was lost, please click below to download a copy of it. Please send me an email if you have any questions!
Thank you to all of the students and families who attended our first-ever Arts Residency Kick Off event! The evening was full of music, art, and fun! Those in attendance were treated to an introduction of all of Stone's fabulous arts opportunities, an amazing sitar performance by 8th grader Faith G., a gallery of impressive textiles from the Minasian Rug Collection, and an awesome performance by Edgar Gabriel's StringFusion. I am very much looking forward to an enriching year of arts education at Stone, and hope you are too! |
