Mr. Marsland teaches K-8 music at Stone Scholastic Academy. The 2014-2015 school year will be his 8th year at Stone, and his 10th year teaching music.
Mr. Marsland has played the piano since he was in the 7th grade, growing up in East Providence, Rhode Island. In band, he also played clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon. He attended Providence College (Providence, RI) for his Bachelor's degree in music education, then relocated to Chicago to work on a Master's degree in music theory at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). He completed a second Master's degree in educational technology from Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI), where he was fortunate enough to participate in the overseas cohort of the program, taking classes in Rouen, France and Dublin, Ireland (along with Ms. Perry!).
Mr. Marsland was thrilled to be recognized as a Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction in the spring of 2014! He is passionate about providing access to the arts and technology to all students. He currently serves at the Arts Liaison for Stone Academy. He is the recipient of a Little Kids Rock grant, which provided Stone with a class set of 30 acoustic guitars, an electric guitar, a drum set, and ongoing curriculum development. He has also received numerous grants from the Oppenheimer Family Foundation, the Chicago Foundation for Education, the Illinois Computing Educators, and DonorsChoose for project based learning in his classroom.
In addition to teaching at Stone, Mr. Marsland is an online instructor for teachers completing the Educational Technology Certificate Program at Michigan State University. In his free time, he is an avid runner, and has completed the Chicago Marathon three times!
