Music Curriculum At Stone
Here is a brief year-long overview of the music curriculum at Stone Academy:
Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
4th & 5th Grade
6th - 8th Grade
Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
- Students will learn to use their singing voice as they learn a wide repertoire of folk songs from the United States as well as other countries.
- Students will experience playing classroom instruments (such as Orff xylophones and percussion instruments) to accompany various songs and activities throughout the year.
- Students will learn about beat, rhythm, and pitch, and will be able to name, read, and write using rhythm and staff notation.
- Students will investigate movement to music through exploratory and guided movement experiences.
4th & 5th Grade
- Students will continue their exploration of music (beat, pitch, and rhythm) through playing the recorder. All students will need to purchase a recorder from Stone; more information will be distributed to students at the beginning of the school year, or by contacting Mr. Marsland directly.
- Students will investigate other areas of music, such as learning about the instruments of the orchestra, learning about various composers, learning about different musical genres and styles, and listening to a wide variety of recorded and live music.
- When possible, technology will be integrated to provide students a unique learning opportunity through which to explore topics in music.
6th - 8th Grade
- Students will be exploring concepts of music utilizing technology, including music composition, music history, and music theory
- Students' culminating experience in music class will be to learn to play the acoustic guitar. All guitars and necessary equipment will be provided by Stone; students do not need to purchase or rent a guitar to participate in music class.
- Students will learn to play open chords and simple strum patterns on the guitar to accompany songs.
- Students will also have the opportunity to learn basic drum set and keyboard skills to add to their experience learning and performing on the guitar.
